Recently a standup comedian did a bit about "I gotta understand Captain Beefheart," whose name is sometimes smugly dropped by people who bought a few of his albums because of Rolling Stone hype and can't admit they have no idea what the f*** the good Captain was really up to. I don't THINK I'm one of those. I own nearly all his albums and do not consider all of them to be masterpieces. "Decals" follows the Captain's most famous release, "Trout Mask Replica." "Mask" is both amazing and impenetrable. Some critics consider the stripped down, slightly more accessible "Decals" to be even better. I enjoy its interesting instrumentation, cheerfully vulgar lyrics, and memorable songs. Whether it stands on a par with "Mirror Man Sessions" or "Spotlight Kid" (my personal favorites) is up for debate, but I would not be without this disc. Thankfully it has recently been re-released after a long period of virtual unavailability.
